Protocol for Visiting the IMAAM Center: We’re honored to welcome you to our Iftar being held at the IMAAM Center, a masjid (or Muslim place of worship) in the heart of downtown Silver Spring, MD. As such, note that men and women should both dress modestly, in looser-fitting clothing that covers the arms and legs—no shorts or sleeveless shirts for either gender. Women should also wear a scarf that covers their hair and neck. Makeup is OK.

You’ll also want to be sure to wear a mask upon entering the masjid and take other precautions per CDC and local guidelines. In addition, don’t forget your clean socks or stockings, because you’ll be asked to remove your shoes as you enter. The IMAAM Center has a shoe rack just off the entrance where you can safely store your shoes and other personal belongings.

Program History: The Academy of Muslim Achievement is a nonprofit organization based in the District of Columbia founded to increase positive relationships between Muslims and our non-Muslim neighbors, co-workers, and even family members. One way of accomplishing this mission is by inviting local government and business leaders to feasts with the Muslim community during the Holy month of Ramadan.

For the past 10 years, we’ve been organizing these Ramadan Iftar programs. Over the last two years during the pandemic, we shifted to virtual programs due to safety concerns. To facilitate the return to in-person gatherings, we're hosting this year’s event at one of our local places of worship. This is a space that's centrally located and comfortable to members of our community.

We hope this move will provide our government leaders and other guests a more intimate connection to both their own Muslim constituents as well as those living in nearby jurisdictions. While you may not represent the area where this year’s event venue is located, you may likely find that many Muslims in attendance live, work, or have business interests within your own district or ward.
